Whether you’re coupled up or not, a part of a close-knit pack of friends or not, let me take this opportunity to blab about how taking yourself on solo dates is an integral part of a happy human existence – and of course, a way of appreciating the filler chapters of life.
Whilst spending time with others is great, spending time with yourself is a way of working on yourself. RuPaul said it best himself with, “if you can’t learn to love yourself then how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?” And what better way to implement this than spending some good quality time with yourself.
Not only will solo dates help you feel more confident, easy-going, self-sufficient and fulfilled but if you’re an introverted extrovert – like me – they’re also a good way of recharging your energy levels.
Five Solo Date Ideas to Schedule Soon
So, without much further ado – here are my six solo date ideas.
Visit a New Coffee Shop
Now, this is definitely the perfect way to ease yourself into the concept of a solo date.
Head to your cities latest and most pretentious coffee shop. Order yourself a coffee and maybe a cheeky little cronut (I hear they’re the new ‘in’ thing), and head to the cosiest corner of the room. Sit yourself down and relax.
If you’re feeling extra nervous, why not bring a prop? Personally, I’m a sucker for a book as it makes you look more mysterious – even if it’s a chick-lit.
Or another personal favourite is a notebook. Here I jot down anything and everything really – blog post ideas, wishlists, thoughts, yadder yadder. But whilst doing this, there’s nothing better than sneakily people watching.
Make a Romantic Dinner at Home… for One
Go ahead, light that £££ candle. Open your bottle of gin that only comes out on special occasions. Now, instead of shovelling pasta straight from pot to spoon to mouth – which there’s nothing with by the way – take your time in the kitchen. Pick a special recipe you’ve always wanted to try. Blast some tunes whilst you wiggle about the kitchen, and prepare yourself a sit-down meal.
Heck, if you’re feeling even fancier – buy or make yourself a dessert. But whatever you do, make sure to use your dining room table for once, and banish your phone to another room. This is all about savouring the moment, and spending some good quality time with yourself – no distractions allowed.
Sign up For that Class You’ve Had Your Eye On
This is probably my favourite form of solo date – and the one I participate in the most! From pole dancing to boxing, and from burlesque to pottery throwing – I’ve tried it all. And had so much fun doing so.
Whatever you choose to do – I promise you’ll feel amazing afterwards. For an hour or so, you’ll slip into something new and exciting. Then once you finish, you’ll not only be proud but a hell of a lot more fulfilled.
And don’t you dare wait for someone else in your life to be interested in sculpting or netball or flower arranging for you to take a course in what interests you most.
Go on a Picturesque Drive
We live in such a fast-paced world that makes it almost impossible to switch off. So for that reason, why not go for a drive to calm your subconscious?
Catch up on your podcast – I highly recommend Shagged, Married, Annoyed if you’re after a giggle. Or why not create a road-trip playlist on Spotify? Stop anytime you find yourself intrigued – by antique shops, picturesque locations or even a diner. Do it just because you can.
The Fanciest Solo Date Idea: Treat Yo Self
Buy yourself some peonies. Wear your Agent Provocateur lingerie around the house. Make yourself some homemade Pimms. Order yourself a fancy Deliveroo. Why? Because life is too short to only treat yourself on special occasions.
